What GoDrive means for drivers.
GoDrive CarBox follows how the car runs and where it is. In a fleet, this data can be linked to the driver at the wheel. Here is, briefly and without jargon, what that means.
What the black box reads
- The engine’s operating parameters (such as engine speed, temperature, battery voltage, speed) and fault codes, the same information a garage reads during diagnostics.
- The car’s location (GPS position), routes and mileage.
The black box has no private mode: location is recorded on every trip, including outside working hours. That is why the company should set clear rules for using company cars in personal time and share them with drivers.
Who is responsible for drivers’ data
When GoDrive CarBox is fitted to a company’s cars, the company that owns the fleet decides why and how the cars are monitored and is the controller of its own drivers’ data. GoDrive processes the data on its behalf, under the contract.
What the company must do before fitting
- Tell drivers what data is collected, including location, and that there is no private mode.
- Explain the purpose: the condition of the cars, preventing breakdowns, planning service and routes.
- Say how long the data is kept and who can access it.
- Tell drivers how to exercise their rights (access, correction, objection, complaint to the data protection authority).
We can provide the company with a template notice for drivers.
How long the data is kept
For the duration of the contract and at most 3 years after it ends, unless the contract says otherwise.
What the driver gains
A car that is checked constantly is a car that doesn’t leave its driver stranded. A problem caught early means fewer unplanned stops and more safety.
